When you call Zurich Corporation don't be surprised to hear an ECG monitor beeping in the background as the company's technicians calibrate equipment to factory specifications. "We are a small company, keeping our overhead and costs low," said co-owner Augusto Ciorciari.

The Miami, Fla. firm offers new, used, and refurbished equipment, parts and service and specializes in anesthesia and cardiology. Examples of their equipment include defibrillators, oximeters, monitors, ventilators, surgical tables, and anesthesia machines. "We mostly sell to other distributors in those areas and we export worldwide," Ciorciari said.

But international exports did not inspire Zurich Corporation's name. It just has a nice ring to it. "The Swiss city is a town with people that have had a reputation for honesty for hundreds of years so it's a good name for our company," Ciorciari said. The firm is about three years old, but the owners have been in the business for more than 15 years, building a customer base and reliability that lives up to the name. Their 100 percent refund offer for any unsatisfactory merchandise furthers the respect factor. "In 15 years in the market we have never had a problem," he noted.

As far as advice to others in the field, Ciorciari suggested, "Don't try to `sell.' Be on the other side with the customer. With used equipment, which may be sold outside the country through a phone call, if a unit has a problem or scratch, tell the customer what to expect so no one will be disappointed."
