Washington, D.C. – The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) today announced that Lisa Spellman has joined the organization as the General-Secretary for the Digital Communications in Medicine (DICOM) international. In her role, Spellman will provide strategic leadership and manage operational affairs for DICOM stakeholders worldwide.
“MITA is committed to developing standards that ensure patient safety and increase efficiencies in the delivery of care,” said Patrick Hope, executive director of MITA. “Lisa’s extensive experience in international healthcare collaborations and standards initiatives positions her to lead DICOM in advancing the global integration of medical images.”
Spellman said, “I look forward to working with my colleagues at MITA and with the broader standards and healthcare community to expand interoperable healthcare image and messaging standards around the world, reduce regulatory barriers and establish standards to improve patient care and optimize medical device performance.”
Prior to joining MITA, Spellman was the Director of Global Standards for the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and General-Secretary of International Organization for Standardization (ISO) TC/215, Health Informatics international. Prior to her ISO role, she led the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Secretariats for Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) International. Spellman was also a founding partner of The Rapid Creek Group, a management consultancy that specialized in health care policy and technology.
Spellman holds an MBA in international relations and marketing from St. Ambrose University and a BA from Coe College. She is certified as an Associate Standards Professional (AStd) from the International Society for Standards Professionals (SES) and is the SES Global Education Chair. In addition to her professional work, Spellman mentors entrepreneurs from underrepresented populations as part of the Health 2.0 TechEquity Mentoring Program and CSweetener, a non-profit dedicated to connecting female leaders on the path to – and already in – the healthcare C-Suite.
