Orders to Carestream Health are underway from U.S. providers interested in purchasing its DRX-Revolution Nano Mobile X-ray System, designed to provide easy maneuvering and positioning for patient imaging.

Equipped with carbon nano tube technology, the solution carries a reduced size and weight compared to existing mobile X-ray systems, making it easier to position patients in cramped critical areas such as the ICU and the NICU.

“Critical care patients are usually not stable enough to be moved to other areas of the hospital to receive imaging exams, so bedside imaging is needed,” Debra Benjamin, Carestream’s worldwide product line manager, Advanced Radiology, told HCB News. “However NICU and ICU areas are often crowded with equipment that is required to care for very ill patients. This equipment poses obstacles to mobile imaging. The equipment often cannot be moved – or can only be moved slightly – and technologists must make sure that a patient’s lines and tubes are not pulled out or displaced.”

Weighing approximately 220 pounds, the system is nearly one-fifth of the weight of a motorized digital system, enhancing its maneuverability, which thereby enables capturing of excellent quality patient images, as highlighted at RSNA in November and during its debut at AHRA last summer.

It also prevents the risk of fatigue and injury brought on by pushing a heavy mobile system (some of which weigh upward of 1,000 pounds), lifting heavy patients, and placing heavy imaging receptors such as detectors and grids behind patients multiple times daily.

The bobsled shape, compact chassis and collapsible column in the design enable technologists to see above and around the system at all times while the carbon nano tube technology and advanced lithium iron phosphate battery increase its lifetime expectancy.

The DRX-Revolution Nano Mobile X-ray System comprises a fully integrated digital workflow and acts as a compliment to the Carestream DRX-Revolution Mobile X-ray System, designed to capture inpatient, outpatient and ER exams at facilities of any size.

Both use Carestream's DRX detectors, share the same user interface and offer a variety of tools, such as swipe-and-go login, patient wristband scanning, remote exposure, and detector battery charging to increase technologists’ productivity and workflow.

“Unlike the DRX-Revolution, the DRX-Revolution Nano system uses Carbon Nano Tube technology,” said Benjamin. “This technology significantly reduces the size of the X-ray tube, which delivers the smaller size, lighter weight and easier mobility offered by the DRX-Revolution Nano Mobile X-ray system.”

Sales of the solution will include a choice of Carestream wireless detectors that include CARESTREAM DRX-1, DRX Core, DRX Plus and DRX 2530C detectors in several sizes.

In addition, Carestream is issuing budgetary quotes for EU providers in the midst of its CE marking process for the system, and has applied for a Health Canada license.

The system is expected to be available throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe in the second quarter of 2018. Availability in other countries is also set to take place as international regulatory approvals are met.
