Onkos Surgical recently inked a four-year agreement with 3D Systems to gain access to the company’s Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) Orthopedic product line for surgical planning and its 3-D-printed anatomical models.

“[3D Systems] is widely credited as inventors and pioneers in additive manufacturing, and have a wonderful history planning complex cases in the medical space,” Sean Curry, SVP of commercial operations at Onkos, told HCB News. “Their portfolio of Orthopedic VSP products and services matches very well with Onkos’ future direction in the musculoskeletal space.”

The VSP technology is FDA-cleared for personalized cranio-maxillofacial region surgery. The surgeon conducts an online web meeting with a 3D Systems biomedical engineer to simulate and plan the surgery.

Together they create a digital plan that is transferred to the operating room in the form of 3-D-printed patient-specific models, guides and templates.

Onkos manufactures high-quality implants and instruments for patients being treated for musculoskeletal tumors. In September, the company launched its Precision Oncology platform, which helps surgeons create a surgical plan to fit the needs of a specific patient.

Through the partnership with 3D Systems, the companies will work to advance the delivery of personalized surgical solutions to help improve outcomes for patients with tumor lesions in the pelvis and the large bones in the arms and legs associated with musculoskeletal cancers.

The companies also plan to work together to develop a suite of 510(k)-cleared implants and patient-specific instruments for tumor reconstruction in pelvic and long bone applications.
