GE Healthcare receives Carequality certification

Centricity customers can share
data among multiple providers
GE Healthcare announced on Thursday that its Centricity Healthcare Connections Hospital Connect received Carequality certification and is available for Centricity Practice Solution and Centricity EMR customers.

“By implementing the Carequality interoperability framework and receiving the certification, GE Healthcare enables its customers to drastically expand the number of providers and health care organizations with whom they can exchange health data,” Mark Segal, vice president of government and industry affairs at GE Healthcare Digital, told HCB News.

Health care providers in a data sharing network are usually only connected to other providers within their membership. But Carequality brings the entire health care industry together through its national-level common interoperability framework.

As of August, over 260,000 physicians, spanning about 23,000 clinics and 850 hospitals, are sharing health data through Carequality. GE customers that leverage the Centricity Practice Solution will have access to all of those exchange partners as well as new ones to come online each month.

GE customers will also benefit from the partnership between Carequality and CommonWell that was announced in December 2016. It allows subscribers to the two initiatives, which comprise over 90 percent of the acute care EHR market and almost 60 percent of the ambulatory EHR market, to exchange health data.

GE and the ambulatory practice The Oregon Clinic piloted Centricity Healthcare Connections Hospital Connect. The Clinic expects to save clinicians at least one hour per day on chart reviews and information searches, reduce the number of duplicative tests and unnecessary services and provide more personalized care.

This project started because the Clinic’s CEO, Dr. Craig Fausel, had a goal to meet Meaningful Use Stage 2 requirements for better interoperability.

“He can vividly describe the experience of being in an exam room with a chronically sick, complex patient and having limited information with which to work,” said Geoff Lay, direct of digital product management at GE. “His energy and advocacy for connectivity is what really enabled GE Healthcare to move forward on this collaboration."

GE is now in the process of scaling Centricity Healthcare Connections Hospital Connect across its customer base.
