Royal Philips announced on Friday that its Philips Ultimate Small Parts Solution for ultrasound imaging scored FDA clearance.

It’s designed to detect abnormalities in small organs close to the skin, such as breasts, testicles, and thyroid, as well as sprains and tears.

"Small parts imaging continues to expand given its versatility in applications combined with the benefits of using ultrasound, such as portability and low risk of adverse events, to assess diseases and disorders of small organs," Vitor Rocha, leader of the ultrasound business at Philips, told HCB News

The solution is available for use on Philips’ EPIQ 7 and 5 and Affiniti 70 ultrasound systems. It features the new eL18-4 PureWave linear array transducer, Philips MicroFlow Imaging, Philips Elastography and Philips Precision Biopsy.

The new transducer enables fine-elevation focusing in order to get high-detail resolution and tissue uniformity for thyroid, breast, testicular, musculoskeletal, vascular, bowel, pediatrics and obstetrics exams.

The transducer can support a complete elastography solution. That includes highly sensitive strain imaging to quickly evaluate relative tissue stiffness across different applications and shear wave elastography to measure tissue stiffness.

The MicroFlow Imaging mode is designed to detect slow and weak blood flow in tissue. It overcomes the challenges that conventional methods have with detecting small vessel flow with high-resolution and minimal artifacts.

The eL18-4 transducer can be paired with the Civco Verza Guidance System to create a biopsy guidance system with almost no dead zone. The needle visualization software improves the display of needle reflections.

"While there are other ultrasound machines that can be used for small parts assessment on the market, the Philips Ultimate Small Parts Solution is the first single-transducer ultrasound solution for small parts assessment," said Rocha.

The Philips Ultimate Small Parts Solution will be on display at the 16th World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology Congress this weekend in Taiwan.
