cut by 56 percent
Lakeland Health in Michigan recently partnered with Royal Philips to install the IntelliVue Guardian Solution with automated Early Warning Scoring at three of its hospitals.

The health system first purchased this product in June 2016. Shortly after, the amount of rapid responses significantly increased and the number of cardiac and respiratory arrests decreased by about 56 percent.

Forty percent of unexpected hospital deaths occur in the general ward, according to Philips. That's because it's difficult to predict which patients need to be closely monitored.

The Intellivue Guardian Solution is equipped with software and intelligent clinical decision algorithms that obtain vital signs and integrate the data directly into the EHR. That helps to reduce human error, and also saves time for the clinicians.

"The IntelliVue Guardian Solution has changed the way we work by eliminating potential transcription errors, and also providing caregivers immediate access to patients’ vital signs, reducing delays in treatment time," Arthur Bairagee, chief nursing informatics officer at Lakeland Health, said in a statement.

The Guardian Solution immediately notifies the clinicians if there are any changes in a patient's vital signs that could put them at risk for conditions like sepsis, cardiac arrest or respiratory failure.

Not only does that allow clinicians to identify potential patient deterioration earlier, but it also improves their workflow by simplifying the medical documentation processes and better utilizing limited staff resources.

The newest version of the IntelliVue Guardian Solution received CE mark in October 2016, and FDA approval in early 2017.
