Q&A with Sean Fowler, CEO of Marina Del Rey

March 17, 2014
Sean Fowler
Sean Fowler was appointed CEO of Los Angeles' Marina Del Rey Hospital early last month. This month, he sat down with DOTmed News to talk about his background, his new role and his goals in his new position.

DM: How did you get started in the industry?

SF: I enrolled at Texas A&M University with plans to become a veterinarian. However, over the course of my studies I changed my major to Human Nutrition, and once I learned that hospital administration was a career option, I knew it was a fit because I had a strong sense of mission to help people. During my last year of undergraduate studies I decided to pursue the hospital administration program offered by the University of Houston, which built the foundation for my career and where I am today.

DM: How long have you been working in the industry?

SF: I have been working in the industry for 22 years, beginning with my first Health care industry position as a graveyard pharmacy technician.

DM: How does your background play a direct role in what you bring to this new position?

SF: In my new role as CEO of Marina Del Rey Hospital, I bring a deep history of hospital operation experience. Over the course of my career, I am proud to say I have received accolades for improving hospital efficiency, while maintaining high employee and physician satisfaction scores. These are all areas that are important as I begin my new role at Marina Del Rey Hospital.

DM: What are your goals for your hospital in your new position?

SF: I am still becoming fully entrenched in my new position and look forward to sharing more specific goals in the coming months, but right now I can say that safe and quality patient care will be the underpinnings of our focus.

DM: How would you like to see the hospital grow?

SF: I would like to see the hospital grow efficiently, with a continued focus on quality patient care as well as high employee satisfaction.

DM: What excites you most about the industry these days?

SF: I am encouraged by Value Based Purchasing program for hospitals, as well as the potential that all people may have access to health insurance coverage. I believe both of these will have a positive impact on the healthcare industry and the quality of care offered to patients.
